The Blue Whale of Catoosa: A Love Story

One of the most iconic Route 66 landmarks has withstood the test of time, and it’s a love story for the ages.

One of the most iconic Route 66 landmarks has withstood the test of time, and it’s a love story for the ages.

A lot of hard work and love went into building this 80-foot whale. Believe it or not, this big blue beast has a bit of a romantic back-story. Back in the 70s, a zoologist built the Blue Whale of Catoosa as an anniversary gift for his wife who ran an alligator farm and collected whale figurines. Their children, many other Catoosans, and out-of-towners traversing America's Mother Road would stop for a swim, a smile, or a picnic. And eventually, this place became the iconic roadside attraction it is today. I love that this man loved his wife so much that he wanted to build something that would float as a symbol of their devotion. I love that he had the courage to chase his passions and bring his ideas to life. And I really love that long after Hugh and Zelta passed away and the big grinning whale was abandoned, locals collectively loved this Route 66 staple and trademark of love enough to help maintain it all these years.
